In a statement, the Belgium-based European Transport Safety Council said it hoped that the Cybertruck was not sold here. "A vehicle of this size, power and huge weight will be lethal to pedestrians and cyclists in a collision," the council said.
During the launch event in Austin, Texas on Nov 30, Tesla live-streamed crash test videos, following which experts told the news agency Reuters that they needed crash-test data to reach firm conclusions about the safety.
Days after Elon Musk's Tesla launched the Cybertruck, safety experts expressed concerns about the electric pickup truck's angular design and said its stainless-steel exoskeleton could hurt pedestrians and cyclists and damage other vehicles on roads.
Experts also said they were alarmed by the crash test videos released by Tesla, adding the heavy weight of the trucks and their high acceleration "raise red flags for non-occupants."
